A few days after the license plate theft, Heidi gets a call from a police officer. "Ma'am, we recovered your stolen license plate."
"Recovered it? What? Where was it?"
"On your neighbor's car."
Seriously. Not kidding. The neighbors' 17-year-old son, apparently influenced by his no-good friends, took one of our plates and put it on his car. Problem a) his car was unregistered.
b) he had no license, just a learner's permit.
c) nobody in the car with him had a license.
d) the car wasn't insured.
e) since he only took ONE of our plates, he got pulled over, which is when all of the above became evident.
He spent a night in jail, he's going to get community service and a fine, and he should have his FRICKING HEAD EXAMINED. How stupid do you have to be to pull something like this? Never mind that the cops found him, WE would have found him when he parked his car in front of his house, which is RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO OURS.
*sigh*
On a more scary note: he's Bangladeshi, so under the circumstances a NYC cop might have mistaken a carful of Southeast Asian young men driving around with a stolen license plate for something far more serious than a bad case of peer pressure.
*sigh*
Really. Who does that? One of our plates gone the other hanging by one bolt (and that's added aggravation, since if they aren't both gone, NYPD form says "lost" instead of stolen, and DMV charges for new tags). Now H has to slog through the rain with kid2 to get new tags.
We even paid extra last time we renewed our registration so we could keep our tag number. It was easy to remember. Now we get a new number anyway.
Damn it. Who steals license plates? Why?
